GETTING TO KNOW APPLE HOSTELS AGAIN

I decided at the last minute that since it was July 4th coming up, why not do a 30 Plus Teams Tour of the City of Brotherly Love even if it’s two days?

I actually just stayed for one day, July 4th until July 5th since Philadelphia is less than two hours from New York City .

Besides, hockey season is less than two months away, so I can spend a longer time in Philly then.

You can’t say the Sports Diva doesn’t have her priorities in order right?

I hadn’t been to Philadelphia in more than two years, which is surprising since it’s so close by.

I used to stay at the hostel that’s in the Historical Area of Philadelphia known as Center City, Apple Hostel.

This hostel is part of the Hostel International organization , so if you’re a member like I am, you can get a discount on your stay.

Apple Hostel is located at 33 Bank Street close to Independence Hall .

You can take a Greyhound bus or even better, the Megabus which goes to 6th Street, across from Independence Hall.

You can walk down to Bank Street from there.

If you have a lot of luggage, Megabus is the way to go

When I first stayed here, there was one hostel building .

Now, there’s two as the reception area has located to the the modern building across the street , known as the “West Wing”.

The rooms in the hostel are in the old building , known as the ” EastnWing”.

There’s no elevator in the building , which has three floors, so don’t look for one,

I stayed on the second floor in the 18 bed female dorm .

Each bed has outlets, a reading lamp, and a privacy curtain, which I don’t remember them having before.

The lights go out at 11pm and on at 10am, but if you have to get out before that time, just try not to disturb your fellow hostelmates.

Everyone is given a key card to get in out not just the hostel front door, but the door to your dorm or private room.

There’s also a code to get into your room.

While many of the hostels have free breakfasts every day, Apple Hostels only does on weekends , and that’s just cereal and oatmeal .

Since this area is filled with restaurants and stores , finding a place to eat breakfast isn’t a problem .

While the East Wing still has a kitchen, the main kitchen has moved to the new building , which looks like something out of one of those fancy interior magazines or commercials.

If your own 30 Plus Teams Tour brings you to the City of Brotherly Love , Apple Hostel should be the place to stay.

Believe me, you won’t be disappointed .

HELLO CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE

It’s July 4th and what would this day be without celebrating the birthday of the country in the place where the Declaration of Independence was written , Philadelphia , Pennsylvania .

I have been to Philadelphia many times but not in the past couple of years and especially not on July 4th.

I rode the 2:35pm Megabus ,which starts at 34th Street and 11th ave.

It’s supposed to be a 2hr ride depending on traffic , but with the way the driver was driving it might be shorter.

It seemed as though he either wanted to get home to eat some food , see the firecrackers or maybe he had a plane to catch because he went through the Lincoln Tunnel really fast.

When I and the other passengers finally settled in , the driver made several announcements .

One of which I really wasn’t in the mood to hear.

‘This bus will only be making ONE stop in Philadelphia today. Due to the July 4th parade , we will NOT be stopping at 6th and Market Street . ‘

Wouldn’t you know it?

That’s the stop that’s the closest to the hostel that I’m staying at .

It’s only 3-4 blocks away from 6th and Market.

I was going to have to do one of two things .

Take the SEPTA train from 30th street down to 2nd Street or walk 27 blocks to the Hostel.

As I’m only staying one night, I don’t have that many bags.

As the bus is getting closer and closer to Philly , I haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet.

No matter what I decide to do , all that matters is that I’m spending America’s 243rd birthday in America’s first capital , Philadelphia .

MERRY CHRISTMAS PEEPS !

It’s December 25th here in the United States but for the rest of the world, Christmas Day came early.

I just want to wish all of you who follow my blog the happiest of all Christmases whether you celebrate it with family, friends, by yourself or even not at all.

Christmas just isn’t about getting that new car, clothes or even money .

It’s not even about Santa Claus, but that’s another story .

Have the best and happiest Christmas ever, even if you are staying home or going on your own 30 Plus Teams Tour .

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE SPORTS DIVA!

GETTING TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS NO MATTER WHAT THE SEASON IS.

It’s less than a week before Christmas .

Don’t ask me if all my Christmas shopping has been done.

It hasn’t .

As for all those Christmas cards that I used to like to send out to friends and family after Thanksgiving .

Nope, that’s not happening this year.

As a matter of fact , the older I get, the less and less I feel about doing anything that has to do with Christmas .

This includes buying presents for everyone under the sun and mailing and giving out Christmas cards .

I really haven’t been in the Christmas spirit for a long time now and as I mentioned in one of my posts on my favorite holiday, it sure wasn’t Christmas .

What I do like to do though, not only at Christmas, but anytime, is getting together with people that I haven’t seen in a long time.

I don’t get to see these people that often because most of them live in New Jersey, not New York City like I do.

I call them affectionately, “My New Jersey Devils Posse “.

That’s right, you guessed it.

If they’re friends of the Sports Diva , some kind of sporting event is happening because they’re sports fans too, usually hockey and baseball, my two favorite sports.

This particular crew just happen to be fans of the New Jersey Devils hockey team.

The only time I really see them is, of course, when I’m doing a 30 Plus Teams Tour of Newark, New Jersey .

Even though they love a different hockey team than I do , the Sports Diva always has a wild and crazy time with this crew, male and female.

We all tell stories about our families, friends, travels to other arenas to see our teams, ( this is a 30 Plus Teams Tour , duh!)the latest trade rumors, and dare I say it, HOCKEY GOSSIP!

Of course, no get together with my crew would be complete without some smack talk between us.

It’s fun, but not mean spirited.

In between periods of the game, there’s always time for a group photo, which is so much fun and I LOVE IT !

We can’t take serious pictures, so we all just act the fool.

Good times definately!

Being around my crew makes me realize that no matter what the holiday is or what the sports season is, friends, even if they aren’t close, are very special .

Thank you God for these guys, My New Jersey Devils Posse .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER  KING

Today is January  15th ,  and in the  United  States  it is the birthday  of Doctor  Martin  Luther  King .

We usually celebrate it the second Monday in January  but this year the holiday  does fall on his actual  birthday .

It’s  a national holiday in most of the United States ,  but some states were late to the party of really honoring MLK.

Arizona of all states was one of the last states to honor the holiday and they only did it because  they were losing tourists  dollars.

Yes, even in the United States ,  boycotts do work.

Today is the day that a lot of politicians basically  give lip service  to Doctor  King’s  words.

They can quote all of his speeches but when it comes to actually  doing the words in those speeches, that’s  another story.

This doesn’t  just include politicians  in the United  States , but many countries because  Doctor  King was influenced by  the  teachings  of  Gandhi .

Happy Birthday ,  Doctor  King.

It’s  too bad you aren’t  around right now because not only does the United States  needs your calming influence ,  but the rest of the world  does also .

I  DIDN’T  GET A PARTRIDGE  IN A PEAR TREE FOR CHRISTMAS

December  25 is officially  over ,  but I’m  still thinking  about Christmas  songs .

You might recognize the song that goes, “on the first day of Christmas ,  my true love gave to me- a partridge  in  a pear tree.”

I don’t  remember  too much of the sing, but I’m  going to  change the words.

A lot.

My true love didn’t  give me  anything  nice on the first day of Christmas .

Instead, for the first  day of Christmas ,  this was my present  from the city of Boston ;

A white Christmas ,  chills, a sore throat ,  coughing ,  sneezing ,  and wheezing .

While many people  were ripping the covers off their presents, I was putting  covers over my body.

I was shivering!

The rest of my “12” days of Christmas  weren’t  any different .

No, let me stop lying.

It went downhill from the first day of Christmas .

My second day of Christmas ,  I was on a Peter Pan Bus along with a few other  people  who  were in the same  shape that I was.

Most of us were wrapped  up  warmly, coughing ,  sneezing and freezing  all the way from South Station  Bus Terminal  in Boston  to Port Authority  in “The Big  Apple  “.

(More on the Peter Pan bus ride to and from Boston  in a later post.)

On my third day of Christmas ,  I didn’t  have ladies dancing, there were no pipers piping, or lords a leaping.

I had doctors and nurses taking my temperature ,  my vital signs and doing xrays to make sure that I didn’t  have pneumonia .

My “last” day of Christmas, day number four, was spent like days one thru three.

I’m  under the covers except now I’m  taking medicine and drinking lots of fluids.

There will be no five thru 12 days of Christmas  because  I just know it’s  going to be like days one thru four, just saying.

I once wrote a post about my favorite holiday .

Christmas  wasn’t  it, and now I know why.

I didn’t  get a partridge  in a pear tree for the  first day of Christmas  or any of the other days of Christmas .

Instead ,  I  got a box of  tissues, chicken soup, orange juice, a blue surgical mask, and a bottle of  cough syrup.

Merry Christmas  to me!

OH WHAT A CHRISTMAS

The tree is sitting in the living room, there’s  not that many presents under it and not that many people to ooh and aah who gave what to whom.

It’s  Christmas   2017 in the city  of  Boston, and guess what?

It actually  IS a white Christmas .

Snow is falling from everywhere and I can’t  even see Boston Logan Airport from the window, even though  it’s  very close to the place that I’m  staying in.

Christmas  is  usually a time to eat, be with the family and of course ,  watch all those basketball  games that come on every Christmas .

This Christmas , though, I  can’t  do any of those things.

My Christmas  present  from the city of  Boston was to get sick.

Very sick.

I couldn’t  eat, hang out with the family or even watch any basketball .

(That’s  how I know that  I’m  really sick when the SportsDiva can’t  listen to or watch a sporting  event  )

Tea, Motrin, Toast and Soup were my companions for Christmas .

As I was leaving to go back to New York  the next day, it took me a long time to pack.

I finally did it at 2:30am  and then went back under the comforter.

Thank you Boston for your Christmas  gift to me.

OH WHAT A CHRISTMAS !
