FUN FACTS WHEN YOUR 30 PLUS TEAMS TOUR BRINGS YOU TO PITTSBURGH .

It  might  not  be  a  place  on  your  radar ,  but  you  might  consider  Pittsburgh  as  one  of  the  cities  to  take  a  30  Plus  Teams  Tour  in .

”  The  Steel  City  ”   was  named  one  of  the  country’s  most . livable  cities .

It  was  named  for  a  politician  who  never  even  visited  the  city ,  British  Prime  Minister  William  Pitt .

It  may  be  called  ”  The  Steel  City  ” ,  but  you  could  call  it  ”  The  City  of  Bridges  ” ,  because  of  all  those  bridges  in  and  around  the  city .

All  446  of  them .

Three  of  the  bridges  are  known  as  ”  The  Three  Sisters  ” .

Their  official  names  are  the  Rachel  Carson ,  the  Andy  Warhol ,  and  the  Roberto  Clemente  Bridges .

You’ll  see  them  close  up  if  you  happen  to  be  driving  or  walking  through  Downtown  Pittsburgh  or  the  North  Shore  neighborhood  of  the  city .

Pittsburgh  was  named  as  one  of  the   best  cities  to  retire  in  along  with  cities  in  Georgia ,  Florida , Texas ,  and  Arizona .

It  doesn’t  take  all  day  to  get  to  the  city ,  either .

Five  or  six  hours  from  most  states ,  Washington  DC ,  and  even  Toronto ,  and  it’s  Hello  To ”  Da  Burg . ”

You  could  attempt  to  visit  Pittsburgh ‘ s  neighborhood’s ,  all  90  of  them  if  you’ve  got  the  time  to  visit .  Or  you  just  might  want  to  visit  one  or  two  of  them .

This  city  has  just  as  many  different restaurants   as  New  York  City ,  and some  of  them  are  mentioned  in  Zagat’s  Restaurant  Guide .

Bring  that  appetite  with  you  for  all  the  different  foods  to  eat  in  Pittsburgh .

What  would  going  to  a  hockey ,  baseball ,  or  football  game  in  Pittsburgh  be  without  wearing  the  colors  black  and  yellow ?

All  three  of  the  teams  wear  these  colors  and  if  you  happen  to  be  in  Downtown  Pittsburgh  and  notice  that  the  top  of  the  Gulf  Tower  Building  is  bathed  in  black  and  yellow ,  bet  the  house  on  it  that  the  Pirates ,  Steelers ,  or  the  Penguins  just  won  a  game .

PNC  Park ,  home  of  the  Pirates ,  was  named  as  one  of  the  best  baseball  parks  in  the  country .

Hockey  fans  of  the  other  29  teams  may  disagree ,  but  Penguins  fans  were  named  as  the  best  fans  in  the  National  Hockey  League .

Judging  by  how  loud  it  can  get  at  the  Pittsburgh  Paints  Arena ,  and  how  often  the  team  sells  out  their  games ,  that  just  might  be  the  truth .

Many  years  ago ,  Pittsburgh  was  known  as  ”  The  Gateway  to  the  West  ” ,  and  folks  were  traveling  by  horseback  to  get  around  the  city  that  eventually  became  Pittsburgh .

They  still  are  taking  horses  to  get  around .

Iron  Horses ,  that  is .

Pittsburgh  does  have  a  subway ,  but  it’s  not  24  hours  like  the  subway  in  New  York  City .

Like  the  subway  in  Boston ,  it’s  known  as  ”  The  T  ” .

If  you  happen  to  be  traveling  between  Downtown  Pittsburgh  and  the  North  Shore  neighborhood  to  see  the  Pirates  or  the  Steelers  or  even  to  try  your  luck  at  the  Rivers  Casino ,  it’s  free .

The  city  offers  one  surprise  after  another .

There’s  a  theater  and  museum  district ,  which  is  known  as  ”  The  Cultural  District  ” .

Not  only  are  there  theaters  here ,  but  museums  as  well .

One  of  which  is  the  Senator  John  Heinz  History  Center ,  which  is  a  branch  of  the  Smithsonian .

That’s  Heinz ,  like  the ketchup .

That  started  in  Pittsburgh ,  too .

All  57   varieties .

The  building  that  now  houses  the  center  used  to  be  the  place  where  all  those  Heinz  products  were  made .

Further  down  the  street  is  the  Andy  Warhol  Museum .

He  was  also  a  native  of  the  city  and  just  think ,  you  threw  away  all  those  Campbell  Soup  cans  that  he  made  famous .

Want  a  little  adventure ? How  about  kayaking  on  one  of  the  Three  Rivers  and  see  the  skyline  of  the  city  close  up ?

Not  really  you  say .

So  you  think  San  Francisco  is  the  only  place  where  cable  cars  go  up  and  down all those  hills ?

Nope ,  think  again .

This  city  has  two  cable  cars ,  but here  in Pittsburgh ,  they’re  called  Funiculars .

They’re  the  Duquesne  and  the  Monongahela .

They’ve  been  running  up and   down  the  Mount  Washington  neighborhood  since  1870  and  1877,  respectively .

Pittsburgers still  take  them  to  work ,  just  like  they  did  so many  years  ago .

If you   want  to  go  where  the  locals  go,  visit  the  Strip  District .

No,  this  area  doesn’t  have strip clubs ,  bring  your  appetite  and  the  family  here .

You’ll  find  ethnic  grocery  stores ,  meat and   fish  markets  as well  as  inexpensive  souvenirs .

You  won’t  be  able  to  visit  all  90 neighborhood’s ,  but  one more  to visit  is the  Oakland  neighborhood ,  which  is  known  as  ”  The  Neighborhood  of  Learning “.

It’s  the  home  of  the  University  of  Pittsburgh  and  the  home  of  the  Soldiers  and  Sailors  Memorial  Hall  and  Museum .

It’s  the  country’s  only  military  memorial  dedicated  to  men and  women  in women  in all  branches  of  the  service .

Pittsburgh  is a   city  full  of  surprises  and  if you’re  a  sports  fan ,  it’s  a  city  that  definitely should  be  a  part  of  your  30  Plus  Teams  Tour .
